Although there is evidence to the contrary, there is the belief in traditional Africa that same-sex couples are a Western construct. When women are discovered in such relationships, very often they are victims of corrective rape, "to get it out of them". The simplistic Another Lesbian sketch gives a voyeuristic insight into the mind of the artist and his honest despair at a grave situation.
Muchatuta is interested in and concerned about the way black women’s bodies are objectified through popular culture and forms of sex work and human trafficking.
RONALD MUCHATUTA / Another Lesbian
Muchatuta is deeply affected by the effects of xenophobia and the concept of displacement. "The humiliation that happens within the African continent and beyond has inspired me to elaborate and define the emotional connection I have with victims of migration," explains Muchatuta. "Whether the victims are legal or illegal, the sting of being labelled as an ‘alien' in a place of nonorigin affects many on a global scale. Migrancy is an issue that I choose to engage with on a regular basis."
